In Japan they have a saying: “Ichi Raku, Ni Hagi, San Karatsu”, that is “First Raku, Second Hagi, Third Karatsu”. It represents the three most valued wares for the japanese tea ceremony, with Raku most ideal and precious. This post is about Hagi-yaki, the ware that comes from Hagi. I visited three potteries and each had one huge noborigama (chambered climbing) kiln. I tried my hagi-skills in the last one. They are going to fire it in Hagi style and send it via mail. Very exciting day in Hagi!
